For all of us living the dream on the Caribbean Coast of Mexico, south of Cancun, the idea of an International Airport within 20-30 minutes is very welcoming. As reported by Noticaribe today (Sept 30th), Humberto Trefino, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Communication and Transportation of Mexico said that in two weeks they will announce the names of the final bidders for the construction of the Riviera Maya International Airport. There will be five finalists and each will have to post a $50 million peso bond in order to be considered for the next round.
It was also reported that the budget for the airport is 3 billion USD, 2 hundred million pesos or about 256 million USD. The following companies are in the running and have been given the project revisions: IDEAL- Carlos Slim, Grupo Mexico Larrea, Andres Omega Holzner, OMA (Grupo Aeroportuario Centro Norte), also bearing GAP Jorge Sales, Boston Infrastructure Investment and TAV Airports Company.
Go to the website of your favorite hotel, villa or condo rental agency in Playa del Carmen, Puerto Aventuras, Akumal, Soliman Bay or Tankah and read the property description. Almost all start out with the distance or travel time from the Cancun airport. You will cut that distance or time by more than half when the airport opens. In some cases like Akumal, 20 minutes, instead of an hour and 1/2. Hotel developers and operators traditionally use distance from the nearest major international airport as gauge of desirability of their concepts.
Four to 5 years is the number being talked about before we see the first plane. With that time frame in mind; Do you think the demand for property in these areas will increase? Will property values start rising? When?
