The lure of the beach, coupled with perennial sunshine, and the crash of waves, are all forever etched in any traveler’s mind as the perfect getaway for relaxation. The beach of course can be enjoyed in a myriad of ways. Romantic walks to enjoy the sunset, family affair of building sandcastles, as well as adrenaline-charged kite-surfing, all take place on the beach. The latter, kite-surfing, is the fastest growing water sports, and travelers are finding new exotic locales to pursue this new-found hobby. Any room for beginners, you may ask? Head to Mexico’s Tulum, just south of Riviera Maya for some kite-surfing lessons with Tulum Kiteboarding School, and afterwards get your fix for Mayan temple ruins.
From November through June, the wind season offers great conditions for all kitesurfers, especially for beginners. Wetsuits not required, as the water temperature is just perfect on Mexico’s Caribbean coast. The school is part of the Ocho Tulum Eco-Resort.
You will be the capable hands of an IKO-certified instructor (that’s International Kite-Boarding Organization to the novice!) that has 8-years experience, who will safely teach you the basics of kitesurfing.

Tulum, Mexico, because it’s magic. There’s a yoga retreat at the Maya Tulum Resort that’s really great. I just love that part of Mexico. But Mexico is such a wonderful country in general. I love going out to Chichen Itza and climbing the pyramids and seeing the ancient ruins. The food is amazing, too. The ceviche there was some of the best I ever ate.

Start a party deslumbró en toda la Riviera Maya
Inspirado en los místicos rituales del sol maya, que han hecho tan famosa a la región, los participantes del magno evento Start a party, organizado por la marca de whisky J&B, gozaron de una electrizante fiesta en las idílicas arenas blancas de la zona, con vista a Tulum.
Además, fueron testigos de uno de los espectáculos solares más hermosos del mundo, el Zama, palabra que en maya que significa Amanecer.
Los más de 400 invitados a esta fiesta gozaron de cocteles especialmente preparados para recordar el poder del sol y participaron de una increíble variedad de rituales mayas.
Al amanecer, la reunión contó con la presencia musical de Kinky, Dj Xóchitl y No Somos Machos, Pero Somos, quienes compartieron el escenario con algunos integrantes de Molotov.
Asistieron Sherlyn, Mariana Torres, Mario Sandoval, Uriel del Toro y Ana Brenda Contreras, entre otros.

Este destino turístico recibió la noche del sábado a centenares de visitantes de todo el mundo, quienes acudieron a la fiesta anual que organizó una empresa productora de whisky en la Caleta Tan Kah, en donde se divirtieron con la música de los más prestigiados mezcladores de música y el grupo mexicano de rock Kinki.
El J&B Start a Party, reunió desde las 22:00 horas del sábado a centenares de invitados de diversas partes del mundo, quienes arribaron a este destino turístico desde la noche del viernes, de tal manera que tuvieron oportunidad de conocer las zonas arqueológicas de Tulum y Cobá, playas, cenotes y practicar el ecoturismo.
Por lo tanto, para culminar el día se trasladaron a la Caleta Tan Kah, en donde fueron recibidos con un espectáculo de DJ’s, la actuación del Grupo Kinky, bailes prehispánicos, comida a base de mariscos, carnes y bebidas preparadas con el whisky de la empresa patrocinadora.
En medio de un ambiente festivo los asistentes disfrutaron de la actuación del grupo mexicano Kinky, que puso a bailar a la mayor parte de los asistentes, mientras que otros coreaban sus canciones y contemplaban el juego de luces e imágenes en la enorme pantalla colocada en el escenario.
Fueron más de ocho horas de fiesta en la playa de la exclusiva Caleta Tan Kah, en donde un grupo de mezcladores de música presentaron sus creaciones enmarcadas con luces y diversos videos que llamaron la atención de los presentes.
Una de las partes más importantes de la fiesta, fue la presentación de una enorme bola de cristal, que representa el símbolo de la fiesta que organiza anualmente la empresa J&B en diversas partes del mundo y en esta ocasión se celebró por primera vez en México, en Tulum.
Al concluir la fiesta, alrededor de las 6:00 horas del domingo, los asistentes se reunieron en la playa para observar la salida del sol y posteriormente, se retiraron a sus hoteles para descansar un rato y continuar con sus actividades del fin de semana.
Por su parte, el director de Turismo, Mario Cruz Rodríguez manifestó que como resultado de la coordinación de la empresa organizadora y el apoyo logístico de la Presidencia Municipal, el J&B Start a Party resultó todo un éxito, sobre todo, cuando este destino turístico fue elegido entre otros lugares como Los Cabos, Vallarta e Ixtapa, Zihuatanejo, para celebrar esta reunión anual.
Resaltó que gracias a la intensa labor de promoción internacional que lleva a cabo la administración municipal, en el futuro cercano numerosos consorcios tomarán en cuenta a Tulum para llevar a cabo actividades de carácter internacional similares al J&B Start a Party Riviera Maya.

It is only fitting that wind energy would supply power to an environmental conference. The United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP-16) is in full swing in Cancun, Mexico and renewable energies are taking center stage. Cancun’s windmill will produce 1.5 megawatts on each day, enough energy to power 1,500 houses. This according to the President of Mexico, Felipe Calderón Hinojosa.
“Mexico can generate up to 71 megawatts due to its geographic conditions. This will mean a reduction of as much as 2,000 tons of CO2,” stated Hinojosa during the inauguration of the windmill, just one day before COP16 kicked off on November 29, 2010.
Energy used for the Conference will be produced by the the windmill along with solar cells installed at the Moon Palace Hotel. This is a joint project with Italy. In addition, the country will “capture carbon” to offset the carbon produced during COP-16.
In the beginning of Hinojosa’s administration, Mexico generated only 2 megawatts of clean energy. The goal of the administration is to produce 2,160 megawatts by the end of the term. This means that 26 percent of the total energy produced in Mexico would be from renewable sources. Mexico is one of the leading countries in its reduction of CO2 emissions, right after Germany and South Africa.

During the opening ceremony of the United Nations Conference on Climate Change celebrated in Cancun, Mexico, Mexican President Felipe Calderon Hinojosa welcomed the 194 delegates, as well as ministers of environment as and foreign affairs from Mexico and worldwide.
The President said that humanity has made mistakes not taking care of the planet, and that it is humanity who must solve the problem so that the next generations do not suffer the consequences of the changes that the world is suffering.
The Mexican President added that the humanity has felt the results of climate change such as hurricanes, floods and drought during the last years and the less fortunate have been the most affected. About this, he said, “the breach between climate change and poverty can be closed with sustainable development.”

NEW DELHI: Just a week ahead of the climate change summit in Cancun, there appears to be some resurgence of hope that the UN sponsored process will result in a balanced outcome, which could result in a global agreement at a later date. India appears to have played a pro-active and constructive role in laying out the basis for this balanced outcome.
Environment minister Jairam Ramesh’s framework on “international consultation and analysis” balanced out by a technology mechanism, actual disbursement of finance, found acceptance among participants of the recently concluded meeting of Major Economies Forum.
The Major Economies Forum meet in Washington was attended by representatives of 17 major economies and emitters, as well as the United Nations, with Barbados, Colombia, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Denmark, New Zealand, Singapore, and Spain. The participants expressed support for concluding a “package of decisions at Cancun” which would include adaptation, mitigation, MRV/ICA, finance, and technology.
In his note to the MEF, Mr Ramesh had made it clear that developing countries would consider signing on to a system of global monitoring of climate change efforts or international consultation and analysis only if industrialised rich countries met certain conditions. This includes the US improving its emisssion reduction pledges, and industrialised countries will have to agree to a second commitment period for the Kyoto Protocol. While the chair’s summary of the MEF meeting is silent on the emission reduction targets of the US and other industrialised countries, there appears to be a consensus on an agreement on future Kyoto commitments in a Cancun package. There was also discussion of the relationship between the Kyoto Protocol and LCA tracks.

Alessandra Ambrosio was called on to do more bikini duty for Victoria’s Secret over the weekend and missed the big costume parties in New York. She’s been globe trotting for the lingerie brand, and Tweeting along the way.
Most recently she was in Tulum, Mexico, a center of worship for the ancient Mayans. Today, it mainly draws sun worshipers. In fact, it’s known as the Mayan Rivera, plus it has fantastic Mayan ruins.
“Alright, I missed a great halloween party last night in ny, but I guess it was worth it!!!,” she Tweeted, along with a photo of herself on the sandy white beach.
Ambrosio flew down to Mexico Oct. 30 and is already back in New York City.
Before that, she jetted off to Toronto to celebrate the grand opening of Victoria’s Secret’s newest store in the Toronto Eaton Centre in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Ambrosio, 29, was joined by Lily Aldridge, 24.
“Toronto… Here I come!!!! So excited to see the city and the new VS shop!!!” Ale tweeted.
Alessandra is also getting major face time in Japanese Vogue, where fashion director Anna Dello Russo, who styled Alessandra for the fall 2010 Moschino campaign, just can’t get enough of her.
But most of the attention is focused on the Brazilian model’s work with Victoria’s Secret’s new seven-way custom bra.
Good Morning Tulum
Good morning Tulum!
Yeah, I’ve lived here quite a long time now. The Maya spirits know me well, the jungle animals and fauna trust me implicitly, and my Tulumense friends are numerous. I need to spend more time on the beach, more time in the Caribbean waters, more time exploring the underground rivers of fresh mineral waters known as cenotes.
The stars still shine brightly over my home. I guess the limited growth of large scale city style lighting has resulted in less night light pollution. I hope to see the US space shuttle pass overhead again this week as it falls back through our planetary atmosphere heading towards it’s landing pad in Florida. I saw it two years ago and it was quite a sight, even though I didn’t hear the sonic boom as it sped on past.
It’s fun to ride my bike around Tulum town. I can chat with locals or meet tourists from virtually anywhere in the world. Most tourists who come to Tulum town only stay a few hours or a few days, then continue on to Palenque, Tikal and other parts of Mexico and Central America. Then there are the people who live here off and on, staying during the winter months or going back and forth to their home countries, working there and relaxing here.
Many people like me have decided to stay full time and build their homes. Living in the jungle is like being a pioneer, slowly building, fixing and maintaining your home, whatever type of home that might be. Some people live in palapas, some in a tent on the beach, more and more in newly built air conditioned casas de lujo (luxury homes). But everybody continues to intend upon making their little slice of paradise better, poco a poco (little by little), just like a pioneer.
I enjoy eating the fruits and veggies from of my garden milpa (milpa is a Maya word for farm field). I eat chaya with eggs in the morning, papaya, coco and noni juice during the day and nopal cactus with dinner. I also enjoy a cold beer on hot afternoons. The heat can be oppressive in the summer but believe it or not my Colorado blood has changed to Caribbean blood and now there are times in winter in which I wish I had a fireplace to warm my old, cold jungle bones.
Many Tulumenses don’t like the fast growth rate, not wanting the city to encroach. I think most Tulumenses don’t like the shark like business mentality of many of the novatos (rookies) who come here. But Tulum has a way of shaking out those who do not vibe with the vibe here… if you know what I mean. We have a wonderful mix of Maya, Mexican, Belizian, Italian, French, Argentinian, American, Canadian, British, Czech Republic, Cuban and Spanish people who live here full time and are vested in their interest for the positive responsible growth in the region.
Yes, we jungle people see the environmental changes going on. The ocean waters don’t display the same extent of magical colored coral reefs as they once did only a few years ago. The results of rising ocean temperatures and major hurricanes have taken their toll. Luckily the cenotes are fresh and clean as ever since the underground river current stems from miles and miles of endless jungle stretching across the Yucatan peninsula. Filtered through limestone caves, the fresh clean well water is one of my favorite things about living here.
The Maya ruins of Zama, now known as Tulum, have also weathered the storm but thankfully still vibrate highly and invigorate thousands of tourists everyday. I always thought it was a pity, economically speaking, that Tulum town receives virtually no impact from the amazing Maya ruins on the beach. But maybe that is for the best, allowing us Tulumenses to grow at our own natural rate, which to me has not changed since I came here almost ten years ago.
In Tulum you can hear many different languages being spoken, with Maya Yucateca being the most interesting. Just like many people speak Spanglish, the Maya people of Tulum mix English, Spanish, Italian and French words with aplomb. When I speak Spanish with Latinos in the USA or Espanolos from Spain, they almost always have to ask me to explain some of my word usage. Like a Brit speaking with an American, sometimes the words don’t have the same meaning there as it does here.
But that is what makes life interesting and why Tulum is such a fascinating place to live.
